Hepatitis C virus RNA is 5′-capped with flavin adenine dinucleotide
“RNA viruses have evolved elaborate strategies to protect their genomes, including 5′ capping. However, until now no RNA 5′ cap has been identified for hepatitis C virus (HCV), which causes chronic infection, liver cirrhosis and cancer. Here we demonstrate that the cellular metabolite flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) is used as a non-canonical initiating nucleotide by the viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase, resulting in a 5′-FAD cap on the HCV RNA.”

Hep C: Mystery of how deadly virus hides in humans is solved
“With a new method for examining virus samples researchers have solved an old riddle about how Hepatitis C virus avoids the human body’s immune defenses. The result may have an impact on how we track and treat viral diseases in general.”

Treating hepatitis C ‘feasible’ in patients with HCC, improves overall survival
“Failure to achieve sustained virological response and the presence of more advanced chronic liver disease were associated with mortality in patients with hepatitis C and hepatocellular carcinoma, according to a researcher at EASL Congress.”

Multnomah County To Distribute Drug Paraphernalia Supplies For Street Drug Users
“Portland, Ore. — Multnomah County has confirmed that it will start distributing clean tin foil, straws, glass pipes (referred to as “bubbles” and “stems”), and snorting kits to street drug users, with a focus on individuals who smoke fentanyl, methamphetamine, or crack. The decision comes as a response to changing drug use behaviors, particularly the increasing prevalence of fentanyl over heroin. The Multnomah County Health Department (MCHD) stated that fewer individuals are seeking clean needles for intravenous drug use.”
